Top 10 Lyrics I Wish I Wrote (Part I)

This will be made in parts. It’s not possible to include every song I wish I wrote in one post. There are a lot of good lyrics out there.

But for now…

Top 10 lyrics I wish I wrote, in no particular order:

1. Pink Floyd- Pigs

Not only does this song just rock your face off, the lyrics are witty and gritty.

“And when your hand is on your heart, You’re nearly a good laugh,  Almost a joker. With your head down in the pig bin, Saying “Keep on digging.” Pig stain on your fat chin.”

Hey you, Whitehouse, Ha ha charade you are. You house proud town mouse, Ha ha charade you are. You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street. You’re nearly a real treat, All tight lips and cold feet, And do you feel abused?”

2. Bob Dylan- Masters of War

In light of recent happenings in our country and throughout the world:

I couldn’t find a good YouTube for this song, so I apologize it’s not Bob Dylan in the video. But you can hear the lyrics.

“You that hide behind walls, You that hide behind desks, I just want you to know, I can see through your masks.

You put a gun in my hand, And you hide from my eyes.

And you hide in your mansion, All the young people’s blood, Flows out of their bodies, And is buried in the mud.

How much do I know? Oh to talk out of turn, You might say that I’m young, You might say I’m unlearned, But there’s a one thing I know, Though I’m younger than you, That even Jesus would never, Forgive what you do”

3. Elliott Smith- Pictures of Me

Depressing, heart-wrenching, Elliott-Smith-Goodness.

“Start stop and start , Stupid acting smart , Flirting with the flicks , You say it’s just for kicks.

You’ll be the victim of your own dirty tricks

Jailer who sells personal hells, Who’d like to see me down on my fucking knees, Everybody’s dying just to get the disease”

4. Leonard Cohen- Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye

Classic lyrical genius.

“I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm.

I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,  walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme. You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me, It’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea.

But let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie.”

5. Sufjan Stevens- All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version)

Only because I like the Classic Rock Version slightly better than the original, but the lyrics are the same.

“Tomorrow you’ll see it through, The clouded out disguises put you in the room. And though I wandered out alone, A thousand lights abounded on our home.

So yeah I know I’m still afraid, Of letting go of choices I have made, All delighted people raise their hands.

All we had always, all we had always wanted to before. The hurricane inclined us, grappling on the floor.

I’m not easily confused, The trouble with the storm inside us grew. But I had so much to give, In spite of all the terror and abuse.

Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to strangle you in spite of what you’d like. And don’t be a rascal, don’t be a laughing dog in spite of odds. All I’m deciphering from the spirits in the light within. All delighted people raise their hands

In restless dreams I walked alone, The clouded out disguises left me in a dream of lightness.

And the people bowed and prayed, To the neon god they made. And what difference does it make? I love you so much anyway. And on your breast I gently laid, Your arms surround me in the lake, I am joined with you forever.”

6. Tori Amos- Icicle

I could list entire albums by Tori Amos. My favorite female songwriter of ALL TIME.

“Icicle icicle, Where are you going? I have a hiding place, When spring marches in.

Greeting the monster in our easter dresses, Father says bow your head like the good book says. Well I think the good book is missing some pages.

And when my hand touches myself, I can finally rest my head. And when they say take of his body, I think I’ll take from mine instead.

I could have. I should have. I could have flown, You know I could have, I should have, I didn’t go.”

7.Tool- Pushit

Lyrics are weird, interesting, and come with hidden meanings. Songwriting is amazing, too.

“But you’re, Pushing and shoving me. You still love me and you pushit on me.

Rest your trigger on my finger, bang my head upon the fault line. Take care not to make me enter, ’cause if I do we both may disappear.

I’m alive when you’re touching me, Alive when you’re shoving me down.

Saw that gap again today, As you were begging me to stay. Managed to push myself away, And you, as well.

If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way.

There’s no love in fear.

Staring down the hole again, Hands upon my back again, Survival is my only friend, Terrified of what may come.”

8. Eddie Vedder- Society

“It’s a mystery to me, We have a greed with which we have agreed, And you think you have to want more than you need. Until you have it all, you won’t be free.

When you want more than you have, you think you need. And when you think more than you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.

Society, you’re a crazy breed. I hope you’re not lonely without me. Society, crazy indeed. Hope you’re not lonely without me”

9. Modest Mouse- Talkin’ Shit About a Pretty Sunset

There are only two lines in this song that make it worth adding to the list.

“And I claim I’m not excited with my life anymore. So I blame this town, this job, these friends, the truth is it’s myself.

Changed my mind so much I can’t even trust it. My mind changed me so much I can’t even trust myself”

And finally,

10. Cat Stevens- Father And Son

Another heart-wrenching and eloquent lyricist.

“It’s not time to make a change, Just relax, take it easy. You’re still young, that’s your fault. Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy.

But take your time, think a lot, Why, think of everything you’ve got. For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen. Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away. I know I have to go.

All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside. It’s hard, but it’s harder to ignore it. If they were right, I’d agree, but it’s them, they know, not me. Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away.”

So, there they are. I had a list of about 30 songs and that was after a quick inquiry, so… more to come!

Any suggestions?
